We are looking at different advertisements. By paying attention to the colours and pictures in the ad, we figured out who the audience is. We also looked at what the ad was trying to tell us.
TEXT TO SELF
When we are reading a story, we are making connections to our selves. We ask ourselves, what does this remind me of?
FRIENDLY LETTER WRITING
The grade ones are learning about letter writing. We are starting our unit with writing friendly letters to friends, classmates and pen pals! Check out our success criteria for this task and a sample letter we wrote to Br. Yahya.
OPINION LETTER WRITING
We have also started writing opinion letters where we follow the same format of a letter except the body of the letter is an opinion paragraph. See the success criteria and sample letter below.
COMPARING CHARACTERS
We are comparing characters by looking at their character traits and showing how they are same or different from each other. We also gave examples from the story that show their character traits.

HOW-TO STORIES
We have been reading and looking at all kinds of how to stories! Now the grade ones have turned from writers to teachers by using their writing to teach others how to do things! Check out our success criteria as well as a sample how to story we worked on in class.

We are learning about different types of media and creating our own forms of media!
RETELLING
In order to fully understand what we read, we have been practicing retelling the story in our own words.
VISUALIZING
We are learning to create mental images when we read a story. We find that a clear image in our minds helps us understand the story better and lets us make better predictions!
We are Authors!
The grade ones have also been busy writing about special moments in their lives. We discussed how writers catch a moment, hold on to it and put it on paper. Once we are finished our writing, we must edit our work by using an editing checklist or CUPS. I have posted the editing checklist below for you to help your child with their writing.
LIST WRITING
We have started writing all kinds of lists. We wrote about what we did on Eid, what we ate at our Eid party and all the activities we did. See our success criteria below to help you practice writing lists with your child.
